GoSplit Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We’ve got answers. Below are some of the most common queries about GoSplit. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to contact us!

GoSplit is a carpooling app with focus on people who are already planning to drive somewhere and have spare seats, sharing their ride with others going the same way. Unlike Uber, GoSplit drivers are not operating as taxis, they’re ordinary drivers offering to split the journey cost with passengers. This means rides are often cheaper because it’s cost-sharing, not profit-driven. Plus, our emphasis is on reducing traffic and emissions, which is a bit different from a commercial rideshare service.

Becoming a driver is easy! Just download the app and sign up with your driver’s license info. No P-endorsement or taxi license is required. If you have a valid standard license and a reliable car with insurance, you’re eligible. We do ask for some verification to ensure safety, but there’s no bureaucratic hurdle. You can start offering rides as soon as you’re registered and approved in the app.

Currently, GoSplit is officially launched in Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch, Kaikoura, Tekapo, Wanaka, Queenstown, and Arrowtown. We are expanding to new locations. Join our mailing list or follow our social media for announcements on new city launches.

Prices on GoSplit are essentially cost-sharing. The app suggests a fare based on distance and estimated fuel cost, which is then split among riders. This typically makes it the cheapest ride option for passengers and helps drivers cover their expenses. Payment is handled through the app via credit card, no cash needed. At the end of the ride, the app automatically charges each passenger their portion and deposits the total to the driver (minus a small GoSplit service fee).

Safety is very important to us. All users have verified profiles. Drivers must upload license and vehicle info and passengers verify their identity as well – so you know you’re riding with real, vetted people. You can view ratings and reviews for each driver or passenger before you accept a ride.

Not at all. GoSplit is flexible. You can use it as much or as little as you want. If you’re a driver, you can post a one-time ride or a daily recurring commute, it’s totally up to you. If you’re a passenger, you can check the app whenever you need a ride. There’s no obligation or subscription – it’s there when you need it!

We know New Zealand’s community is diverse. The GoSplit app and website are available in English, with support for Mandarin Chinese and Hindi in the interface/text. We’re also considering Spanish and other languages if there’s demand. You can switch languages on the website via the language selector / look for the globe icon, and the app will prompt you to choose your preferred language on first use. \

You can download the app for free from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Simply search “GoSplit” or follow the App Download link on our site. If you visit our site on your phone, clicking the download button will automatically send you to the correct store for your device.

Yes! Think of it this way – if you normally drive alone to work and you start giving a ride to one other person, you’ve eliminated one entire vehicle’s worth of emissions for that trip. That’s a 50% reduction in carbon footprint for two people commuting. Multiply that across dozens or hundreds of carpools, and it’s huge. Carpooling also reduces traffic congestion, which means less idling and smoother traffic flow for everyone. Our Environmental Policy page goes into more detail, but in short: every shared ride counts towards a greener planet.

We are just starting out, so there might be times or routes where you don’t immediately find a match. A few tips: try broadening your search radius or adjusting times slightly, sometimes leaving 15 minutes earlier can help find a carpool match. If you’re a driver, posting your ride well in advance, like the night before gives passengers time to join. The community will grow, and ride matches will become more frequent. In the meantime, rest assured we’re doing marketing to grow the user base. You can help by inviting friends – more users means more rides for all!
